The story
When a wife discovers the deed to her husband Zach Smith's house has been quietly transferred to his childhood friend Lily Stark, she confronts him and her mother-in-law Linda. Neither shows remorse: Zach calls the property his pre-marital asset, free to give away, while Linda insists Lily, who grew up without a home, deserves a place of her own. Behind their coldness lies a sharper suspicion—they believe the wife is eyeing the house for herself, or hiding an illness, and they would rather hand it to Lily than let her claim a share.
What they do not know is that she has been caring for them through their cancer treatments, and that the reason she has no child is not hers to bear. Calmly, she refuses to beg. She threatens lawyers and a lawsuit, then accepts their challenge: a divorce, on her terms, while they remain certain she will walk away with nothing.
Opening
I took the deed to confront him and my mother-in-law. But to my surprise, both of them wore disinterested smiles.
"I transferred the house to Lily," my husband said, nonchalantly. "It’s my pre-marital property. I can give it to whoever I please."
"Lily grew up without a home," my mother-in-law added, "I just want her to have a place to call her own in this city. It’s not like she’s going to live there, so stop making a fuss!"
