The story
Seven years after her parents' divorce, Aubrey Monroe arrives at The Westwood Institute as a freshman, only to meet her father, Pierce Harrison, attending the orientation as a major investment representative. He asks after her mother, Julia Monroe, and suggests the family have dinner together. Aubrey walks away, unable to tell him that her mother is dead.
When the school's administrator, Mr. Keller, summons her to the Dean's office at Pierce's request, she refuses to see him. Pierce keeps calling and texting, threatening to bother Grandma Monroe, and Aubrey finally agrees to meet him. There he presents himself as a proud father, but the old betrayal surfaces: it was Aubrey herself who once introduced her classmate's mother, Mrs. Price, to him. His coldness and calculation built his fortune, and Julia's life ended at thirty-three because of him.
Aubrey insists she is a Monroe and has no father. When Pierce slaps her for it, she sees his true face again. She cannot move on, at least not for her mother.
Opening
At the freshman orientation ceremony, I saw him: Pierce Harrison, attending as a major investment representative.
My father.
He froze for a fraction of a second when he saw me, his voice hesitant as he spoke: “Aubrey, is your mother… is she doing well?”
I swallowed the bitter lump in my throat and turned to walk away.
He quickly grabbed my arm. “Tell your mother to call me. We should all have dinner together.”
My eyes instantly welled up. I yanked my arm away.
