The story
Iris has loved Adrian Lockwood for years, and when he came to her door one rainy night, she believed she had finally been chosen. But when his ex, Sloane Hartley, returns divorced, she takes the passenger seat, the office next to his, and the scent of rosemary he refuses to let fade. Pregnant and nauseous, Iris is told to tough it out while Sloane's comfort comes first.
After Adrian forgets her birthday and misses the prenatal appointment to cut Sloane's cake, Iris signs the termination form alone. He never notices. Then he asks her to hand over the project she built from the first pitch, and she agrees.
What is left of a marriage when the woman beside him is only a replacement?
Opening
I press my hand to my belly. "A bottle of essential oil."
Yesterday, the moment I open the car door, a sharp wave of rosemary hits me and sends my morning sickness spiraling. I reach for the window, but Adrian Lockwood grabs my hand.
"Don't open it. Sloane loves this scent. She'll be upset if it fades."
I freeze. "I'm pregnant. This isn't safe for the baby."
