The story
Chloe Lin is seven months pregnant when Lucas Foster is sent to prison for four years, and the Foster family drives her out the next day. Susan Foster, George Foster and Victoria Foster make sure no hospital will take her and no one will register her daughter, so Chloe raises the child alone, selling handmade jewelry on the street while Lucas's letters from behind bars promise her marriage and a real home.
On the day before his release, Chloe glimpses Lucas in a hotel dining room, dressed in a fine suit and seated with his family, an elegant woman named Yvonne Qiao and a small girl. He never spent a day in prison; for four years he lived with Yvonne while Chloe endured humiliation, and he warns his family to keep the deception from her.
Chloe slips away before he can be sure he saw her, and as Lucas begins to search for her, she resolves to take their daughter and vanish where he will never find them.
Opening
The day after Lucas Foster went to prison, I was kicked out of the house by the Foster family.
Seven months pregnant, I had nowhere to go.
To provide for my daughter, I set up street stalls, washed dishes, and lived in a tiny partitioned cubicle of just a few square meters. For four whole years, I held on solely through the love letters Lucas sent from behind bars.
