The story
Malachi Lynch works abroad, leaving his six-year-old son Anthony Lynch in the care of his father-in-law, Stephen Shenton, and sends money each month for the boy's living expenses. Every video call shows Anthony well fed, with fish, shrimp and ribs on the table, and Stephen insists the boy eats only what he cooks.
Then Anthony's homeroom teacher, Davina Walker, calls: the boy fainted from hunger at school. Malachi flies home to find Anthony severely malnourished, anemic, with old bruises on his arms, back and thighs. Stephen blames the school and the boy's pickiness, while Malachi's wife Sienna Shenton stays away on a business trip, indifferent to her son's condition.
At home, the fridge is full and Stephen coaxes Anthony with broth, yet the boy cowers at his grandfather's voice. That night, Malachi asks his son what he really eats, and whether Stephen has ever hit him.
Opening
I'm busy with a project abroad, so I leave my six-year-old son, Anthony Lynch, in the care of my father-in-law, Stephen Shenton. I send him 2,000 dollars a month for living expenses, with additional money for holidays and special occasions.
Every time Stephen video-calls me, he tells me Anthony is eating and sleeping well. On camera, there are always fish, shrimp, and beef in front of him.
