The story
At twenty-eight, Nora is diagnosed with ALS, and her husband Ethan gives up a prestigious fellowship to stay at her side. For five years he works in a basement lab on an experimental formula, testing it on himself until he collapses, while the press calls him a saint of modern medicine. Now his devotion has worn thin. When Nora loses control of her body once more, Ethan scrubs his hands until they bleed and speaks to her with cold disgust, while Summer Walsh pleads with him to put Nora in hospice care and spend the night with her instead.
Nora can move only her eyes. She watches Ethan tend to Summer with a tenderness he no longer shows her, and she learns that his research has stalled for lack of fresh neural tissue. Summer urges her to stop destroying him. Loving him most, Nora pages the duty nurse and asks to sign anatomical donation papers, keeping the decision from Ethan.
As the city prepares its fireworks, Nora weighs the last tenderness she has left to give against the life she once dreamed of sharing with him.
