The story
On a family vacation, Cara's husband Adrian takes his old flame Lily out on a jet ski into restricted waters. Drunk on rosé, Lily guns the engine and slams into the yacht Cara bought for her brother Leo. As the vessel sinks, Adrian comforts Lily, telling her the passengers were at fault for being in restricted waters. Only after the yacht vanishes does he call Cara to say her brother and mother went down with the boat.
At the beach, Cara finds the wreckage and overhears witnesses call the pair inhuman for not helping. Adrian dismisses the deaths as an accident, blames Leo for reckless speeding, and signs a waiver of legal action behind Cara's back. When Lily whispers a cruel taunt over the bodies, Cara lunges at her and Adrian strikes Cara, splitting her lip. Cara demands a divorce; Adrian refuses, afraid of what she might do to Lily, and carries Lily away.
Cara texts Leo, who is alive and stunned that his stolen yacht sank. She vows to make those responsible pay and asks police to retrieve the black box.
Opening
The whole family was on vacation, but my husband, Adrian, was out with his old flame, Lily, zipping across the restricted waters on a jet ski.
Fueled by half a bottle of rosé, Lily was demanding to ride to the opposite island, promising to carve a heart in the sand for him.
Next thing I knew, she was gunning the engine, twisting the throttle all the way, and slamming straight into my brother's yacht.
Adrian didn't even glance at the yacht as it started to go under.
