The story
Twelve-year-old Chloe lives with her parents, her younger brother Leo, and a grandmother who has just moved in. From the moment she arrives, the old woman complains that Chloe's room is too big for a girl and hints that Leo deserves more, while quietly cornering Chloe to warn that she will be pulled out of school and sent to the countryside for farm work.
Chloe's mother refuses to tolerate it. She takes back the best food at the table, ignores every demand dressed up as tradition, and makes clear that no daughter of hers will be sent away to labor. Leo, tall for eight and fiercely protective, takes his own mischievous revenge on his sister's behalf, even when it costs him a spanking.
As the grandmother's dislike of Chloe hardens into something colder, the family closes ranks around her, and the old woman learns that this household will not bend to her rules.
Opening
Grandma naturally dropped one into her own bowl, leaving mine completely empty like a sick joke.
Before I could even pout or feel wronged, Mom, who had just gotten off work late, marched up and snatched the crab right out of Grandma's bowl with her fork and handed it to me.
