The story
Julian Vance believes partners should not be each other's emotional dumping grounds, so he grants his girlfriend Iris ten minutes a day to unload on him. She accepts the rule, until her grandmother, the woman who raised her alone, dies. At the funeral home she asks for an exception; Julian refuses, saying she must learn to process things on her own. Yet that same night he comforts Zoe Whitmore on the balcony until dawn.
After the burial he offers his card for the funeral costs and checks his watch, telling her the ten minutes are up. When Zoe sends a photo from a high railing, Julian orders the car to stop and leaves Iris in the rain. She declines his card, accepts an institute position starting in three days, and asks a lawyer to draft a waiver of her claim to the shares she signed over.
Julian promises to make it up to her with a new car. Iris answers that what she wants, he cannot afford to give.
Opening
My boyfriend, Julian Vance, always said that people in relationships shouldn't use their partners as emotional dumping grounds.
So he set a rule. I got ten minutes a day to unload on him.
He said his job wore him out and he hoped I'd understand.
I agreed. I even thought he simply had strong boundaries.
Then my grandmother died, the woman who had raised me on her own.
