The story
At a gilded bank during the holiday rush, Elena Ross discovers a teller's blunder: her fifty-thousand-dollar withdrawal has been recorded as a deposit, leaving her account one hundred thousand dollars richer. When she returns to the counter to point out the mistake, Teller 733, Tiffany Miller, refuses to look at the slip, hides behind the sign declaring the bank not responsible for discrepancies once a customer leaves the window, and has security escort her out.
Outside, Elena reads the passbook and sees the truth. Since the bank insists the rules are the rules, she decides to play by them. She deposits the cash at a neighboring bank, then transfers the full balance out of Pacific Coast Financial into a brokerage account beyond easy reach. When Tiffany's frantic calls come, Elena calmly reminds her of the policy she quoted, refuses to be bullied, and blocks the number.
The next morning, Tiffany arrives at Elena's office with the branch manager, Mr. Victor Sloan, and two police officers, accusing her of theft before a lobby full of colleagues.
Opening
I double-checked the passbook printout against the fifty thousand dollars in cash I held. Fifty thousand. Red-inked, fresh from the vault, still smelling faintly of new currency. I turned and walked back to the counter, tapping lightly on the thick glass to get the attention of the teller who had served me.
I held up the receipt. “Excuse me, but I think you made an error on this transaction.”
Tiffany Miller—I remembered her name from the tag—snapped her head up, her face already tight with defensiveness.
