The story

Charlotte watches through the ICU glass as Nurse Tiffany pulls out her father's breathing tube, photographs his bluish-purple face, and grins. When Charlotte bursts in, Tiffany calmly reinserts the tube and whispers that he is dying anyway, so why not make a contribution. Dr. Miller and the head nurse side with Tiffany, and security escorts Charlotte out.

The police find no proof: the surveillance angle is too far and the photos have vanished from Tiffany's phone. The hospital calls it a misunderstanding, and her fiancé Daniel, who knows President Thompson, urges her to accept their reassignment and waived fees rather than risk her father's care. Charlotte caves in, but the question of what contribution Tiffany meant still gnaws at her.

Opening

My dad was in the ICU, kept alive by a ventilator.

Through the viewing window, I watched Nurse Tiffany pull out my dad's breathing tube, lift her phone, and flash a triumphant grin at his face.

I burst in like a maniac, but she calmly reinserted the tube, smiling sweetly yet maliciously at me. "He's dying anyway. Why not make a contribution?"

I called the police and went to President Thompson, but the entire hospital hailed her as a hero…
