The story
The day before our wedding, my fiancée, Giselle, told me she had to fly to Denver on an emergency business trip.
"A major discrepancy came up in the data audit," she said. "I'll handle it first thing in the morning and be back on the earliest flight. I won't miss our ceremony, I swear."
Worried I would doubt her, she FaceTimed me the second she stepped off the plane.
On my screen, she was bundled in the heavy down parka I had bought her for Christmas. Behind her was a standard hotel room with sterile white walls, and outside the window, a blinding blizzard whipped against the glass.
She panned the camera in a slow, deliberate circle.
One pillow on the king bed. A single toothbrush resting in the porcelain cup by the sink. She even tugged open the sliding closet door so I could see it was completely empty.
I forced a smile, nodded, and urged her to get some sleep.
The moment the screen went black, the dam broke. Tears spilled over my cheeks, hot and silent.
This was a historic El Niño winter.
In Denver, the forecast was sixty degrees and sunny. It wasn't snowing at all.
