The story
For five years, Hazel has been Sebastian Cross's companion, a kept woman in his Palisades Estate. The staff whisper that she looks just like Madeleine Vance, the lost love who left him for Paris. When Sebastian finally ends things, he offers her diamonds or a property deed. She asks only for a slice of buttercream cake—the birthday treat her own family never gave her.
Sebastian wants a clean break for Madeleine's sake. But when Madeleine returns and accidentally tears an IV from Hazel's hand in a hospital corridor, Sebastian looks at the blood and calls Hazel a stranger. That night he calls her anyway, promising a private clinic and a driver, unable to let go.
Hazel has already booked a flight out of Seattle. When the driver arrives with a wrapped box, she turns him away. After a lifetime of waiting for someone else's umbrella, she is ready to walk her own path.
Opening
I didn’t ask for the diamonds or the portfolio of stocks he expected. I asked for a slice of buttercream cake.
The love my own family was too bankrupt to give me, my benefactor had provided in spades.
After I finish this birthday cake, I’ll have no regrets left.
He wants to build a home with the one that got away.
And me? It’s time I walked my own path.
This was the first time Sebastian had ever spent New Year’s Eve with me.
