The story
Tori is the biological daughter the Sterling family brought home after eighteen years lost in the slums. On her first day, her father Arthur sets a brutal rule: clothes, meals, allowance, even medicine must be won by drawing cards. Only the Ace of Hearts grants what you ask. For two years Tori never draws it, while Olivia, the adopted daughter who took her place, draws it every time.
On their shared twentieth birthday, Olivia feeds her a piece of peanut cake. As Tori's throat swells shut, Arthur fans out the deck and tells her to draw for her EpiPen. She hides an Ace of Hearts in her sleeve, but Julian catches her, Ethan calls her a faker, and Jax crushes her fingers and destroys the medicine. Eleanor orders her locked in the sub-zero basement freezer.
Curled in the dark, unable to breathe, Tori asks why her own family gave all its love to an impostor. This time, she will not beg again.
Opening

For two years, I never drew it once. Meanwhile, Olivia, the adopted daughter, got the Ace of Hearts every single time.
On the night of my worst allergic attack, my throat swelled shut. I knelt on the floor, begging them for my EpiPen.
My father merely tossed the deck of cards at my face. "You know the rules. Draw the Ace of Hearts, and you get the medicine."
