The story
For years, Piper set aside her own ambitions for Lucas, her childhood sweetheart, and for a family that never made room for her. When the graduate admissions letters arrive, Lucas asks her to postpone her degree, take a full-time job and pay her sister Chloe’s art school tuition, while the moonstone necklace she had longed for gleams around Chloe’s neck. Her parents, Brenda and Arthur, and her brother Kyle, side with Chloe, and Lucas never speaks up for her.
At dinner, Piper’s own acceptance goes unmentioned. No one asks about her results; she is told to do the dishes while the others leave for the symphony. That night she writes to Professor Anderson, asking whether the fellowship she once declined is still open, and unlocks the box holding every dollar she has saved since high school.
This time, Piper is done waiting for her family’s approval.
