The story
When her uncle calls out of the blue needing $340,000 for an emergency, Chloe is torn. Before she can answer, her husband Mark scoffs that the uncle who gave her the condo years ago expected nothing in return, and now only wants to leech off its $865,000 value. The uncle hears every word, and the line goes dead.
Mark shows no guilt, calling her relatives broke and the request a bottomless pit. He already dreams of selling the condo for a suburban house and funding his brother's down payment. When Chloe reminds him the condo is her pre-marital asset, he darkens, then his mother Susan arrives, insisting everything she owns now belongs to the Miller family.
Chloe resolves to help her uncle, even if it means selling the condo.
Opening
I was put in a tough spot; after all, that’s a massive amount of money.
Before I could process it, my husband chimed in: "When your uncle gave you that condo years ago, he definitely wasn't expecting anything in return, right?"
I nodded.
He scoffed. "Then what right does he have to ask you for money now?"
