The story
A kindergarten teacher returns from maternity leave just before New Year's Day, only to be handed the Sprout Class when Ms. Su falls ill. On her second morning she meets Caroline James, a designer-clad mother who issues a list of demands: a handwritten five-hundred-word growth diary with illustrations, a center seat in the front row, kneeling service at meals, and calls answered within three rings. Caroline then pins a ten-dollar bill to the teacher's shirt and declares that, since the teacher is still breastfeeding, she will serve as a wet nurse for her son, Jonathan Barber.
The teacher refuses, recording the demand and calling it harassment. Caroline threatens to end her career, and Principal Bonnie Randolph begs her to endure it, revealing that Caroline's husband, Caleb Whitney, oversees the kindergarten's inspections. When Jonathan pushes Delia Vargas and Caroline refuses to apologize, the other parents quietly ask that their children be kept away from him. The teacher takes the evidence to the principal, insisting she cannot guarantee the children's safety if this continues.
Opening
I spent my first day memorizing the names and habits of twenty-two children. The familiar rhythm of tiny voices and sticky fingers settled something restless inside me.
It felt good to be back.
The next morning, I stood at the entrance with the other teachers, wearing my professional smile as we welcomed the children.
That was when I met Caroline James.
Designer labels dripped from her head to toe—flashy, loud, impossible to miss. She marched up and practically shoved her son, Jonathan Barber, into my arms.
"You're Ms. Henson, right?" Her gaze raked over me like I was a stain on her Louboutins.
