The story
On the morning of a school field trip, June is burning with a fever of 104 degrees, but her mother dismisses her illness as an inconvenience and leaves her with her grandmother. The moment the front door clicks shut, the grandmother hauls the shivering girl from her bed, drags her to the utility room, and shoves her into a deep freezer, locking the lid behind her.
June claws at the plastic walls until her nails bleed, but her screams are swallowed by the compressor's hum. Frost crusts her lashes as she slips toward darkness, whispering an apology to the grandmother who left her there. Then a key turns in the front door: her father, Robert, is home early. She slams her head against the freezer to make him hear, but his phone rings, and her mother's voice insists June is only faking a fever for attention.
When the grandmother returns, she tells Robert the girl must have run away. As the family gathers for dinner and plans a carnival trip, no one searches for June, and no one remembers the padlock in the utility room.
Opening
My mother didn't care. She was too busy getting my younger brother, Toby, ready for the outing. To her, my illness was just an inconvenience, a smudge on her perfect day.
"Keep an eye on her, Ma," my mother said to my grandmother as she headed for the door. "Don't let her cause any trouble."
When the front door clicked shut, my grandmother stepped into my room.
