The story
Avery Fairclough is a surgeon temporarily assigned to a small-town hospital. When she steps out of the staff elevator, she finds her husband, Grant Fairclough, screaming for a doctor to save his wife and baby in the operating room. The wife is not her. Minutes later, Avery is ordered into the OR to perform the surgery on the pregnant woman, Vanessa Hilton, the wife of Grant's cousin Ethan Hilton. As Avery works, she realizes Grant and Vanessa have been carrying on an affair, and that Grant's mother, Carol Fairclough, likely knew. Despite her rage, Avery must stay professional and save the baby. After the delivery, Carol confronts Avery in the corridor, not recognizing her, and refuses to let the baby go to the NICU. Avery decides that as soon as she gets home, she will divorce Grant and sever all ties with these shameless people.
Opening
I rushed out of the elevator and found my husband screaming for a doctor—
for his wife in the operating room.
And that wife wasn’t me.
Minutes later, I was the surgeon ordered to save the woman carrying his child.
That was the moment I stopped being the fool in this marriage…
and started becoming the storm that would destroy it.
