The story
On Christmas Day, Carrie Mitchell learns she has late-stage liver cancer and only months to live. The same night, she catches her boyfriend Tyler Martin cheating and walks away with the money he owes her, then cuts off her mother Ellen and the family who treated her as an ATM.
Resigned to spending her final months on herself, she gives money to a nervous mugger in Briarwood Alley and rescues a stray dog near Oakwood Apartments, rushing it to the Brooklyn Veterinary Clinic. As she carries the puppy home, an older man with graying hair follows her, claiming the dog is his grandson and asking for it back.
Carrie demands proof, but the strange, guttural sound he makes in reply sends a shiver down her spine.
Opening
All I had to do was spend it, and my liver cancer would miraculously disappear.
I stared at the balance on my phone, wiping away my tears.
If I could spend to my heart’s content before I die, it was worth it!
The day I was diagnosed with liver cancer was Christmas.
The streets were filled with the sound of Christmas carols, and the atmosphere was lively and cheerful.
I drifted down the street with the lab results in my hand.
"Liver cancer, late-stage" were the words glaring at me from the medical report.
