The story
A game turns to catastrophe when Brooke and Garrett, the best friend and fiancé of a sleeping woman, open the gas range to see how deeply she sleeps. A spark from a frayed wire ignites the fumes, and the fire leaves her with burns across most of her body and a face erased into scar tissue. Waking from a coma, she sees them sobbing at her bedside, swearing devotion and care for the rest of her life, and she chooses to believe them.
Brooke moves in as her caregiver and Garrett works from home, but penance slowly curdles into routine, and routine into forgetting. The two grow ever closer in shared dinners, late movies and easy touches while she sits masked and bandaged in the corner, no longer truly seen. When a holiday weekend arrives, they lock up and leave without a thought for her, stranded on the balcony of their apartment.
Far away, Brooke and Garrett lounge by the sea, and Garrett sends a smooth, practiced lie about work and a family emergency. Hovering unseen above them, she watches their intimacy and wonders whether anyone would even notice her absence.

On a humid Tuesday afternoon, while I was knocked out on cold medicine in the bedroom, my best friend Brooke and my fiancé Garrett decided to see just how deep my sleep went. Brooke crept into the kitchen and twisted the brass knob on the gas range just enough to let out a low, sulfurous hiss. They made a bet: how many minutes before I woke up coughing?
