The story
From childhood, Chester is raised on his father's rule of fair exchange: every meal, every pair of shoes, every dollar must be earned through chores and credits. His younger brother Brian Jones receives new clothes and meals freely, while Chester scrubs floors and collects recyclables for months to afford the basics. When he collapses at school from malnutrition, his father visits the hospital only to tally the bill and add it to Chester's tab.
Beside him, another boy's father spoon-feeds his son chicken soup and worries only about his health. Watching that tenderness, Chester sees the life he was never given, and after his father refuses even his bus fare home, he resolves to repay every cent spent on him.
Now, years later, his father calls in tears, ruined and abandoned by Brian. Chester offers him a place to stay, on one condition: fifty cents per window, earned rent, the same fair exchange he was raised on.
Opening
If I wanted anything, I had to earn it myself.
Fifty cents for washing the dishes. A dollar for mopping the floor. Five dollars for a perfect score on a test.
To buy the pair of white sneakers I had been dreaming of, I spent three months collecting recyclables.
In that house, I lived like a pieceworker, paid by the task.
It was not until my senior year of high school that everything began to crack.
