The story
On his eightieth birthday, Hugh Sterling dies asking his wife Sarah Vance whether she ever truly loved him. Her hesitation answers for her, and he vows he would not love her again. The universe calls his bluff: he wakes as a twenty-four-year-old in his childhood bedroom, decades of future knowledge intact.
In his past life, Sarah, the brilliant only daughter of the Vance dynasty, used a fake engagement to Hugh to escape an arranged marriage, and their decades-long marriage stayed cold. This time Hugh swears to keep away from her, throws himself into the Sterling family business, and resolves to refuse her request for help when their families meet.
Yet Sarah is not the woman he remembers. She smiles at him, dodges his coldness, and even turns up at his office, claiming they are secretly in love and engaged. Hugh, an old man in a young body, refuses to be played, but he cannot shake her off.
Opening
I kicked the bucket on my eightieth birthday. Outside the door, my kids were wailing like the world was ending.
But my consciousness was fading fast.
With my last breath, I looked at the woman who had been by my side for decades, her hair now snow-white.
I forced a weak smile and asked, "Sarah, tell me the truth. After all these years... did you ever actually love me?"
Seeing the hesitation in her eyes, I got my answer.
