The story
Delores has waited three years for Raymond, the Don of the Carraso family, to make good on his promise of marriage. Each time, he has offered a reason to delay: the family's mourning, the feds circling the money, one last shipment before the baby arrives. She gave up her place among the world's top hedge fund managers to run his fortune, and she is seven months pregnant when she finally learns the truth at the East Coast compound: his men call Raffina Donna, and Raffina is the widow of the brother Raymond buried.
When Delores confronts him, Raymond calls the title a trifle and tells her to look at substance, not surfaces. She walks away from the Carraso family and takes back her own worth, refusing to let him speak for her. But Raymond will not let her go so easily, and the question of what they legally are to each other hangs between them.
Opening
“Never heard of the Don having a fiancée, and pregnant no less. You've got some nerve running a con on Carraso turf.”
The barrel of a gun pressed cold against my temple. My heart was clawing its way up my throat when I caught sight of a familiar figure across the room.
“Raffina,” I shouted, “tell them I'm your brother-in-law's fiancée.”
