The story
Harper has spent twenty-three years as the cherished daughter and sister of her family, until the morning of her graduate school entrance exam, when her parents reveal that she is not their biological child. Their real daughter, Chloe, is coming home, and Harper must stop calling them mom and dad, and her brother Mason "brother." At the exam hall entrance, they cheerfully instruct her to practice calling them "uncle" and "auntie" before she goes in to sit her first paper.
Numb and tearful, Harper forces herself through the exam, only to find her father has removed her from the family group chat to spare her awkwardness. When Mason picks her up afterward, she thinks he has come for her, but he takes her shopping for a welcome gift for Chloe and asks whether she resents the real daughter's return.
Cast out by the family she loves, Harper resolves to finish her two-day exam and then leave the city, disappearing from their lives forever.
Opening
"Harper, don't come home right after the exam."
"We have good news: our biological daughter is coming back."
I thought they were joking.
But my brother hugged me. "Harper, it's true. You can't call me 'brother' anymore."
Seeing my pale face, my parents laughed.
