The story
For twelve years, Clara and Ethan built a child-free marriage by choice, sealed by his vasectomy. Then Ethan finds a palm-sized block of meat in their freezer that Clara refuses to discard, and a lab test reveals it to be a human placenta. Hidden in her locked desk is a birth certificate: Clara is the mother, and the father is Leo, the man she calls her adoptive brother. The birth date falls within the two years Ethan spent abroad on an engineering project.
When Clara discovers the meat is gone, her composure shatters, and she retreats to the guest room. Days later, Ethan follows her to a private children's medical center, where a small boy calls her Mommy and Leo stands beside them as family. There he learns the truth: their son, Andy, is ill and needs a bone marrow transplant, and Ethan is a perfect match. Clara and Leo have been planning to use him all along.

There was a piece of meat in our freezer, palm-sized, that my wife refused to throw out. For over a year, it sat there, a frozen block of mystery she guarded fiercely.
I was curious what could be so precious. One day, I chipped off a tiny piece and sent it to a lab for analysis.
The results came back, and the world tilted on its axis. It was a human placenta.
