The story
When her older sister Jasmine is adopted by the Sterling family, the wealthiest household in New York City, Violet believes the village girl has become a wealthy heiress overnight. A letter and a box of books arrive, telling Violet to study hard and come find her outside the mountains. Then all contact stops.
Years later, Violet is admitted to NYU and searches New York for her sister, only to discover that the Sterling family has no adopted daughter. She dates Julian Sterling, the beloved only son, who drunkenly reveals a secret: he had an older brother who died before turning eighteen, and his parents bought a girl with a compatible horoscope to keep that brother company in the afterlife.
Where did Jasmine go? And what did the Sterlings truly want with her?
Opening
When my older sister was fourteen, she was adopted by the Sterling family, the wealthiest in New York City. The village girl transformed into a wealthy heiress overnight.
In the first year after she left, she secretly sent me a letter and a box of books.
In the letter, she told me to study hard and come find her outside the mountains. She said the world outside was wonderful, that she was living well with the Sterlings, and that I shouldn't worry.
After that, I lost all contact with my sister. I never received another letter.
