The story
At her husband Gilbert's sold-out arena concert, Maeve sits in the very last row and watches the giant screen credit all eighty-seven songs to Cynthia, his ex-girlfriend. Three years ago Maeve gave up her own debut to write his music in a cramped apartment, yet Gilbert thanks Cynthia from the stage, and Cynthia bows from the VIP seat he had promised Maeve.
When Maeve texts him, Gilbert calls her petty, insisting the label head deserves the credit and that a behind-the-scenes writer should not care. Cynthia offers her a little more money, and Gilbert mocks Maeve's cheap clothes, ashamed to have her photographed beside him. He orders her to drive Cynthia home from the afterparty.
Maeve walks out, leaving divorce papers on the nightstand and telling him there will be no eighty-eighth song. At home she finds the tuning fork she once had made for his voice discarded by the bin, while Cynthia's diamond tie clip sits on their coffee table.
Opening
The giant LED screen was scrolling through the setlist, and every single song credit—lyrics and music—read "Cynthia."
Eighty-seven songs. Every single one of them.
Cynthia was his ex-girlfriend.
Three years ago, I gave up my own chance to debut, locking myself away in a cramped apartment to write songs for him.
Now, standing on stage with tears in his eyes, he choked out his gratitude:
"Without Cynthia, there would be no Gilbert today."
