The story
When Mrs. Elaine Sterling offers a million dollars to leave Maxwell Sterling, the woman he has kept for five years accepts without hesitation. She has given him the best years of her life without title or recognition, and word of her decision reaches Max, who rushes to The Beacon Apartments to confront her. He warns her not to regret leaving, then slams the door behind him.
She packs in half an hour and checks into The St. Laurent Hotel, where a clerk recognizes her. She travels alone to Savannah, Georgia, where her bag is stolen and she cannot prove who she is. A stranger, Derek Chandler, helps her at the police station. She changes her number and cuts ties with Max, rebuilding her life at Global Exports Inc. while news of Max and Genevieve Harrison reaches her.
Nearly two years later, an assignment returns her to New York and to The St. Laurent Hotel, where a familiar voice greets Max and Genevieve at the door.
Opening
When Mrs. Elaine Sterling handed me a check for a million dollars to leave Maxwell Sterling, I didn’t hesitate. I had spent five years with him, giving up the best years of my life without any title, any recognition. That million felt like little compensation. Word of this reached Max quickly. Later, I heard he even skipped an important meeting to rush over to see me.
