The story
Penny has spent years trying to please a family that never wanted her. Fostered in the countryside with her grandma, she was brought to the city only to meet a brother, Kyle, and a sister, Lucy — a girl who frames her, gets her locked in the dark room, and is believed every time. When Penny finally records proof of Lucy's lies, Lucy collapses with asthma and the family rushes her to the hospital, leaving Penny holding the evidence like a clown.
After scoring two hundred points higher than Lucy, Penny dares to hope for an Ivy League future. But the family's only computer becomes Lucy's weapon: while Penny is away, Lucy tampers with her college application. With her future erased and her mother's phone call blaming her for Lucy's hospital stay, Penny stands in her bathroom with a small knife and a bleeding wrist.
Then the doorbell rings. The stranger at the door is the man who bought the last bottle of sleeping pills — and he refuses to let her die quietly.
Opening
I wanted to die peacefully, but the pharmacy downstairs refused to sell me sleeping pills.
I sighed and walked into the bathroom, ready to slit my wrists.
Just as I made a small cut.
My phone rang.
My heart skipped a beat when I saw my mom's name.
I thought to myself, If Mom cares about me, I won't die.
