The story
On the eve of her eighteenth birthday, Cassie Mercer's mother cancels her party to stay with her adoptive sister, Daisy, whose depression is flaring again. For ten years, every birthday has ended the same way, and Cassie's body has begun to shimmer and fade. This is the final day of her contract with the Reaper: if her mother does not spend this birthday with her, Cassie will vanish forever.
When her mother rushes home only to leave again for Daisy's hospital ward, Cassie begs her to stay, but her mother calls her selfish and slams the door. The Reaper offers one last chance: if her mother will look at her and sincerely say "Happy Birthday" before midnight, Cassie may remain in the mortal realm.
Through a video call, Cassie pleads for those words, but Daisy's distress pulls her mother away, and the call ends in rage and disgust. With her body dissolving into mist, Cassie can only look at an old family photograph and hold on to her fading hope.
Opening
On the eve of my eighteenth birthday, my mother skipped the final rehearsal for my party.
That evening, a text lit up my screen.
"Daisy’s depression is flaring up again. I can't leave her side right now. Let’s postpone your party, Cassie. I’ll make it up to you, I promise."
I stared at the tips of my fingers. They were already beginning to shimmer, dissolving into a faint, translucent glow. I typed a single-word reply:
"Okay."
For ten years, on every single one of my birthdays, Mom had broken her promise.
