The story
Eliza scrolls through a trending thread after work and finds a stranger boasting about stealing a man from his girlfriend five years ago. The commenter describes befriending the couple, playing the victim, and kissing the man during his worst fight with his ex. She gloats that he is now a partner at a listed company and that they are getting married soon, while his ex never went to college and is rotting in the gutter. Then Eliza recognizes the profile picture: a photo of Sienna and Owen together, one she took herself. She is the ex-girlfriend being mocked.
The memory drags her back. Owen was her childhood sweetheart, taken in by her family when his parents' divorce left him unwanted. She once threw herself in front of his drunken father to protect him, and he swore he would only ever love her. Then Sienna arrived as the new neighbor and classmate, wedged herself between them, and the first official date Owen supposedly arranged ended with Eliza waiting alone in the rain until nightfall, her messages unanswered.
Opening
The title asked: "Should you pursue someone who is already in a relationship?"
