The story
When his wife Chloe’s parents, brother and his family are poisoned by pufferfish at a new restaurant, Benny learns only her company’s antidote can save them. He calls her ninety-nine times before she answers, annoyed that he interrupted her cha-cha with Leo Vance at a gala. She refuses to bring the antidote, calling her in-laws her assets and telling him their deaths would be bad luck.
Instead she gives the antidote to Leo’s poisoned family, posts a photo dancing in Benny’s custom watch, and lets five of her own relatives die. The police trace the restaurant to Leo’s parents, who survived on that same antidote. Chloe still believes Benny’s family died, not hers, and orders the bodies sent to her company labs.
Benny presses charges and lets her keep believing it, while she slaps him for suing the people she saved.
Opening
My wife’s whole family was dying from pufferfish poisoning. The only antidote was made by her company.
After 99 calls, she finally answered, annoyed: “Why are you blowing up my phone over one dance with Leo?”
I begged her to bring the antidote—her parents and brother’s family were dying.
But she gave it all to her first love, Leo, whose family was also poisoned.
“They’re my assets. I decide,” she said coldly. “If your family died, that’s their bad luck.”
