The story
A wife believed she and her husband shared a simple life: double income, no kids. Then two pink lines appeared, and he called the pregnancy a miracle. She learned to be a mother, until a sleepless night in her third trimester led her to his secret account and a video titled Three Toasts to Fate.
In it, a frail girl toasts a plan: a husband who conceives a child with another woman for her O-negative blood, and a newborn whose stem cells will cure her. The wife realizes she is only the incubator. Her husband, the renowned hematologist Dr. Harrison Miller, brings her warm milk and a consent form directing the donation to a patient named Samantha Reed.
She refuses to sign. Then she discovers the prenatal vitamins are Filgrastim, a bone-marrow drug that could kill her. Now she plays along, waiting for the right moment to strike back.
Opening
My husband and I had a deal. DINK. Double income, no kids.
We were religious about protection. We bought condoms in bulk. Yet, there I was, staring at two pink lines.
He played the part of the comforting husband, telling me to embrace fate, that maybe this child was meant to be our little miracle. Against my better judgment, I believed him. I started from scratch, learning how to be a mother.
Then came the third trimester. Anxiety stole my sleep. One night, while he was passed out, I found his secret social media account.
