The story
For three years Asher Reed has belonged to Sloan Maxwell, bound by a contract that made his life payment for a sin he never understood. When he finally chooses a quiet death, Sloan drags him back from the bridge, refusing to let him escape the debt she says he owes for Owen Bell.
Then Asher wakes on the very first day he ever met her, a girl in a white sundress waving in the summer light. He runs, determined to keep their lives from tangling again. But a month later Owen bursts into his studio with news: Sloan Maxwell has asked him out, and they are together.
Dragged along to a party at The Gilded Room, Asher sits as far from the couple as he can, trying to vanish. Yet the past he fled is already closing around him once more.
Opening
It was the third year I’d been bound to the Maxwell name, serving out my debt. The third year I belonged to Sloan Maxwell. That’s when I decided to leave.
I managed to acquire a slow-acting poison, injected it, and walked alone to the edge of the city’s oldest bridge. I thought I would finally die in peace, a quiet exit from the endless storm.
But a Rolls-Royce Ghost cut through the sheet of rain and screeched to a stop beside me.
