The story
Snatched at three and sold six times, Maeve learned early that existing for free was immoral. By ten she had earned certifications as a line cook, housekeeper and electrician, certain that utility was the only thing keeping her alive. Then her biological parents, Claudia and Richard Geoffrey, track her down, and a DNA test confirms she is the daughter stolen thirteen years ago.
Brought to the Geoffrey estate, Maeve cannot stop working. She mops the marble, scrubs her new bedroom, reorganizes the storage closet and rises at four to cook a feast, all to pass a probation period she has invented. Claudia weeps, her brother Eric suspects a performance, and Prima, the adopted daughter, offers a timid smile.
To a girl who believes she must earn the right to breathe, a family that asks for nothing is the most terrifying thing of all.
