The story

Margot Hayward grows up as the village disgrace's daughter, raised by a mother who endures beatings and humiliation to keep her in school. Margot answers every insult with violence, and each time, her mother kneels in the dirt, begging her to stop fighting before there is no one left to protect her.

At eighteen, the wealthiest family in the city claims her mother as their own, a daughter swapped at birth. A month later, the Hardings' butler returns her corpse, wrapped in a sheet, and blames her for theft, jealousy and a fatal fall. He offers to take Margot back to the Harding estate out of pity.

There, the fake heiress Caroline Harding and her daughter Lindsay hold the family's favor, and Max Harding calls Margot a stray. Margot has no intention of bowing to any of them.

My mother married the old bachelor, and seven months later, I was born full-term.
