The story
For seven years, Jenna has waited for Julian. She has given him ninety-nine chances, and at a celebration for her best friend Quinn's proposal—an event Jenna helped plan—she watches Julian walk past her to lead out Iris, the girl who held up the signs backstage. He offers Jenna only a few pieces of candy saved from the wedding favors, then turns his easy smile on Iris, promising her a bonus and a day off.
In the car afterward, Julian insists they are no different from a married couple and offers to take her to City Hall anytime. But Jenna knows the Ashford family rule: before thirty, she must marry or accept an arranged match. Next month on the tenth, she turns thirty. She tells him it is over.
As his phone rings with Iris's custom tone, Jenna steps out into the night, no longer willing to wait.
Opening
Julian's proposal—which I personally helped plan for my best friend Quinn—was a huge success.
After the celebration died down, Quinn pushed Julian toward me with a grin, egging him on.
"Julian, your turn! Why don't you propose to Jenna today too? We'll have double the celebration!"
The spotlight swung onto Julian. I held my breath, waiting.
But he only gave a faint smile, walked past everyone, and headed straight backstage.
