The story
For three years of marriage, Chloe has climbed seventeen flights of stairs to the penthouse she shares with her husband, Ethan, because she was never given a keycard. On a freezing evening, holding a birthday cake for him, she watches her adopted sister, Kylie, swing a keycard and step out to meet Ethan, who follows with a gift and no glance for his wife.
Four keycards exist: two for her parents, one for Ethan, one for Kylie. When Chloe asks why, Ethan calls her petty and tells her to show grace for her delicate sister. Her mother calls to invite Ethan to Kylie's apple pie, and announces that Kylie will move into their spare room. Ethan tells Chloe to throw the cake away, then leaves.
An email offers Chloe a place on an exchange program in Milan. When she mentions it, Ethan laughs and tells her to grow up. Her succulents are destroyed, her portfolio shoved aside, and Chloe must decide whether a home that locks her out is worth staying in.
Opening
Three years of marriage, and I never once had a keycard to our penthouse.
Seventeen flights of stairs.
I climbed them on foot, every single day, for three whole years.
It all culminated on that freezing evening. I stood outside the locked lobby door, clutching a birthday cake I'd bought for my husband, Ethan, while my hands and feet went completely numb.
A late-autumn drizzle mixed with sleet, chilling me to the bone.
Shivering, I dialed Ethan's number.
All he said was, "Can't you just take the stairs? Think of it as a workout."
Before I could reply, the line went dead.
