The story

Ryan Bennett has spent years hiding small acts of rebellion, the latest a tongue piercing he keeps secret from his older brother, Ethan Bennett. When Ethan discovers the silver stud at dinner, he grips Ryan's tongue between his fingers and demands he remove it, then delivers a colder blow: he is marrying Emily Carter next month, and Ryan will be his best man.

Rather than obey, Ryan adds another piercing below his collarbone, a private mark of the humiliation and jealousy he cannot voice. Ethan grows distant, consumed by wedding plans, until the night he spots the new stud and postpones the wedding, telling Emily his brother is seriously sick.

Searching Ethan's office for a lost book, Ryan finds a velvet box holding every piercing he ever removed, each cleaned, dated and labelled. Ethan catches him, and what follows is a kiss that tastes of blood, then a harsh order to get out.

Opening

My brother found out I'd gotten my tongue pierced.

He didn't lose his temper. He simply caught my tongue between his fingers and refused to let me pull it back.

"Ryan Bennett, do you really like pain that much?"

I stared at him through watery eyes, a twisted sense of pleasure rising inside me.

But what he said next turned my blood to ice.
