The story
For three years, Jeannie Collins has let group-chat polls decide everything between her and Yale Smith: who apologizes first, who she drives home, even whether she loves him. At his birthday party, she casts the question of staying with him or leaving with her childhood friend Marvin Snyder to their friends. The vote lands overwhelmingly for Marvin, and Jeannie follows the majority out the door, leaving Yale alone with an untouched cake.
When she returns at 1:00 am, Yale is packing her things. He tells her the single vote for the boyfriend was not his, and that he is done performing for a crowd that never chooses him. Jeannie calls him petty and insists she was only following the rules, while a new message from Marvin waits on her phone.
Yale has kept 276 screenshots of every poll, every loss, every time he was not her real choice. Now he has to decide whether to keep waiting for a vote that never comes.
Opening
Before the birthday party even began, Jeannie Collins cast her phone screen onto the large display in the private room. Then she started an anonymous poll in the group chat she shared with all our mutual friends.
The question was simple: [Should I stay with my boyfriend to cut the birthday cake tonight, or go with my childhood friend to his movie premiere?]
Thirty seconds.
The countdown began.
