The story
A boy spends six months picking through trash to buy his mother a dress for her birthday, only for her to beat him bloody the moment she sees it. As he lies on the floor, a book appears before him and reveals the truth: he is the tragic male lead of a dark novel, and his existence is the reason his mother's life was ruined by a man named Alan Carter.
Determined to save her even if it means he was never born, the boy reaches through the book into the past and finds his mother at eighteen, carefree and hopeful. She can hear him, and she asks him whether they have a happy family. He warns her to stay away from the party after the entrance exam, but each warning only seems to make her fate worse, and the book's words keep changing in cruel ways.
Back in a rundown apartment, the boy endures his mother's rages and searches for a way to free her from Alan Carter, even as her suffering deepens and her mind unravels.
Opening
For six months, I pick through trash to scrape together enough money to buy Mom a beautiful dress for her birthday. I can't wait to give it to her.
But the moment I hand her the dress, her gentle smile vanishes. She screams, shoves me to the floor, and grabs a chair. She brings it down on me again and again.
