The story
Walter Henderson, sixty-two, is pronounced dead at home and sent for cremation, but a mortician sees his chest move. He is rushed to the hospital, where doctors find a massive heart attack and say aggressive treatment could very likely save him. His family refuses the procedure, saying he is old and they do not want him to suffer, yet they do not take him home. They leave him in the ER, waiting.
By the third day Walter is talking, asking for food and saying he still wants to live. His family refuses oxygen, suctioning, monitors and resuscitation, and transfers him to hospice care. There his wife Brenda warns against feeding him, and his son accuses the staff of profiting the longer he lives. Only his elderly mother, Eleanor, rides the bus to feed him by hand.
As the staff sneak him food and suction his lungs against the family's orders, one question hangs over the ward: what is Walter holding on for?
Opening
The patient was a sixty-two-year-old guy, Walter Henderson. He hadn’t been brought in by paramedics or dropped off by a worried spouse. No, Walter arrived at our hospital via a frantic call from the director of the local funeral home. Apparently, his family had him pronounced dead at home—some rushed paperwork from a local coroner’s assistant who never even laid eyes on the body—and shipped him straight off for cremation.
Then, as they were prepping him, one of the morticians saw his chest move. A shallow breath, but a breath nonetheless. Then his eyelids fluttered.
