The story
At a tense New Year's Eve dinner, Amelia begins seeing strange floating text that calls her daughter Daisy a "supporting character" destined to donate bone marrow to her cousin Bella, the "female lead"—and to die young from it. When her husband Michael and sister-in-law Clara press her to let Daisy donate, Amelia refuses outright, sweeping the dishes off the table.
On New Year's Day, the text warns her that Michael already had Daisy tested, and that only Daisy is a perfect match. Amelia flees with her daughter to her parents' villa, but Michael drugs her and takes Daisy to the hospital anyway. Racing there, Amelia pulls out Daisy's IV and confronts Michael, Clara and the doctor, who insist the surgery is already scheduled.
As onlookers condemn her, Amelia reveals she has called the police, accusing the doctor of taking a bribe to forcibly extract bone marrow from a ten-year-old.
Opening
Confused, I shot a questioning look at my husband, Michael, who sat beside me. He looked like he wanted to say something but just shook his head.
I shrugged it off and placed a piece of fish, my daughter's favorite, onto her plate.
Just then, a line of text materialized in the air before me.
“The supporting character’s mother is so good to her. Too bad her father is about to make her donate bone marrow to the female lead.”
Supporting character? Female lead? What on earth is this?
I paid it no mind and continued eating.
