The story
A young woman carries a chilling secret: after she kills someone, she absorbs their memories from the past three years. She first discovered this at nine, when a prank with marbles in her father's car caused a crash that killed him and left a woman in a coma — and flooded her mind with his hidden betrayals.
Years later, her friendship with Chloe, the beautiful girl next door, turns into a quiet rivalry. Chloe's grades keep climbing while hers stall, and a dark idea takes root: if she kills Chloe, she will gain three years of Chloe's middle-school memories. Patiently, she engineers the circumstances — the air conditioning, the cold medicine, the alcohol by the riverside park — until Chloe, tipsy and alone, is within reach.
As the two part at the river, only one of them knows what comes next.
Opening
I had a secret. A chilling, impossible secret.
After I killed someone, I could steal their memories from the past three years.
Before my college entrance exams, I killed my academic prodigy boyfriend. And I got into a good university.
When did I first discover this… ability?
It was when I was nine. My parents got divorced, and custody was awarded to my mother. I loved Mom, but deep down, I loved Dad more.
