The story
During a livestream appraisal, a streamer is shown a battered vase by a young girl. He instantly recognises it as junk worth under fifty dollars, but her profile reveals academic awards and a medical report for a serious heart condition. Wanting to help, he claims the vase is from the Qianlong period and offers $15,000, quietly intending the money as support rather than payment.
A woman claiming to be the girl's mother seizes the microphone, insisting a Qianlong vase is worth at least $150,000 and demanding the remaining $135,000. She produces a certificate of authenticity, though the streamer's assistant suspects it is a knock-off. As he raises his offer and explains the vase's true value, her tears and accusations turn the chat against him, and viewers begin reporting the stream.
He cancels the deal and returns the vase, but the money is never refunded and he is blocked. When the woman reappears on a later broadcast showing a crack in the vase, the streamer, armed with packing footage, decides to call the police.
Opening
Staring at the battered vase in her hands, I knew instantly it was junk, not even worth fifty bucks.
But when I clicked on her profile, I saw a wall covered in academic awards and a medical report for a serious heart condition.
I kept a straight face. "This vase is from the Qianlong period. I'll buy it for $15,000."
I thought I was doing a good deed. I never expected a woman claiming to be her mother to jump on the mic:
"Streamer, that's not right. A Qianlong vase is worth at least $150,000! You're a big-shot influencer; you can't bully poor people just because we don't have power or money!
