The story

Sarah sponsored Julian Vance through three years of college, and when he graduates he arrives at her door with bags of homemade jam and a rustic, grateful smile. The warmth lasts only until she hears a cold voice inside her mind: Julian is calmly listing how he will kill her, take her apartment, visit her parents, and seize her company.

Trapped with no surveillance and no proof, Sarah cannot simply call the police. She keeps smiling, dodges the soup he offers to cook, and quietly phones her cousin Vinny, a man who runs a private security firm and understands her old code words about a mad dog and a sturdy iron cage.

As Julian grows impatient and carries a cup of poisoned water toward her, Sarah must hold her nerve until help arrives, knowing the young man she treated like family is ready to bite the hand that feeds him.

Opening

He stood at my door carrying large bags of Homemade Jam, his tanned face full of rustic gratitude.

"Sarah, without you, I wouldn't be here today. Please accept this small token of my appreciation."

I smiled and invited him in, heart feeling warm.

Just as I turned to pour him water, a cold voice suddenly sounded in my mind.

[This apartment location is great. Kill her, and it's mine.]
