The story
Two years after her father's death, Nora Mercer works the surgical wards where he once taught, keeping his unfinished research alive and guarding his name. Then a bouquet of white lilies arrives at the nursing station, signed with a single initial, and the rumor she has dreaded is confirmed: Lucas Hayes is transferring back, and they will soon be attendings in the same department.
Lucas was once the center of both her father's life and her own, and the photograph on her credenza still shows the day they married in the courtyard behind the medical school. Now his remorse means nothing to her, and she refuses to grant him absolution on behalf of the dead. When he corners her in the corridor and vows to come to the apartment to pay his respects to Dr. Mercer, Nora makes clear that he is not fit to speak her father's name.
As the departmental symposium approaches, the whole floor watches, waiting for the two of them to collide.
Opening
The card tucked into the ribbon was plain, the ink sharp:
“Please give my warmest regards to Dr. Mercer.”
The signature was just a single, unadorned initial: L.
Over the past two years, countless colleagues, former residents, and grateful patients had brought flowers or sent condolences in memory of my father.
