The story
On New Year's Day, eighteen bodies wash up in the downtown river, and a forensic pathologist vanishes into the precinct for seven days of autopsies. For her boyfriend, it means their wedding is postponed for the ninety-ninth time. When the case closes, he goes to bring her home and finds her on the morgue table in the arms of her junior colleague, Wyatt, who begs her to delay the wedding once more. She agrees, then admits she has spent the week secretly marrying Wyatt, and that her boyfriend's marriage certificate is a sham — repayment for the three years he served in prison for her father. She believes he has nothing without her: no job, no home, only the care of her paralyzed father. What she does not know is that he is the heir to the Donovan fortune, and that he has already decided to walk away.
Opening
My girlfriend, a forensic pathologist, dropped her half-eaten dinner and disappeared into the precinct for the autopsy. She was buried in work, completely off the grid for seven days straight, and our wedding had to be postponed for the ninety-ninth time.
When I heard the case was finally solved, I went to the precinct to bring her home.
But when I pushed open the door to the morgue, I found her on the autopsy table, tangled in the arms of her junior colleague.
