The story
Liam Sterling has never loved Chloe, the girl his family bound him to in a childhood pact. At a tense family dinner he brings her roommate Tessa and declares, before both sets of parents, that the thought of marrying Chloe makes him sick. That is the last day Chloe loves him.
When another boy finally asks her out, Liam tries to stop it, holding the crayon-scribbled marriage contract he wrote at seven and reminding her she pinky-promised to marry only him. At school, Tessa plays the wounded peacemaker while Maya calls Chloe an ice princess, and Liam carries Tessa away without a glance at Chloe. Soaked by Maya's slushie, Chloe pours hot water and two tea bags over Maya's head and says she is not sorry.
Branded a pariah, Chloe watches Liam and Tessa become the school's golden couple. At a class party, a Truth or Dare question asks Liam whom he would save from drowning, and his answer makes the old promise feel like a prophecy.
Opening
He brought her to the tense family dinner, ready to confront our parents and publicly detonate the pact they’d made for us when we were kids.
He pointed at me, his voice ringing with disdain as he addressed both sets of parents.
"I have never, not for one second, loved her. The thought of marrying Chloe makes me sick."
That was the last day I ever loved Liam Sterling.
